Kurma Avatar: Second Incarnation of Lord Vishnu
The story of Kurma Avatar, the second incarnation of Lord Vishnu, begins with the Deva Asura Sangram, a conflict between the gods and demons. Lord Vishnu intervened and suggested a halt to the fighting, but neither side agreed. To resolve the conflict, Lord Vishnu took on the form of Kurma, a tortoise. The story starts with Rishi Durvasa visiting Swarg Lok, the abode of the gods, and presenting a garland to Indra, the king of gods. Indra, in a fit of arrogance, put the garland on Airavat, his elephant, who threw it in front of Durvasa. This insult led Durvasa to curse Indra, causing him to lose his wealth, pride, and kingdom. This curse set in motion the events of the Samudra Manthan , the churning of the ocean. The Devas, weakened by the curse, sought the help of Lord Vishnu. He advised them to churn the ocean to obtain the nectar that would restore their power and immortality.
